Q: How Does Fantasy Tan Work?
A: Fantasy Tan is a unique method of spray tanning; an air compressor applies a DHA-based solution (see below) to your skin; there is a large spray nozzle used for most of your body, and an airbrush for detail areas (fingertips, hairline, etc.). This method—and this type of equipment—allows for the most precision and the most natural-looking tan.
Q: How Is Fantasy Tan Different Than Other Spray Tanning?
A: All spray tanning is not created equal! A Fantasy Tan looks great because of superior application, superior equipment, superior formulas, and superior technician training. Our application equipment uses a medical-grade air compressor that is quiet and provides a strong airflow required for a smooth and even application; all other brands of spray tanning use cheaper turbine motors—essentially a reverse vacuum cleaner (blows instead of sucks). Our solutions have been formulated with precise amounts of DHA (see below) and do not need to be “caked” on to achieve your desired darkness like other brands do. Finally, our technicians are all trained in person, not via DVD or online videos like most technicians. The end result is a natural, healthy-looking tan that you can feel confident wearing.
Q: How Is Spray Tanning Different Than Other Tanning Methods?
A: Other major tanning methods include automated spray booths, tanning beds, tanning pills, lotions, and natural sun tanning. Please see the “Tanning Methods Comparison” page on our website for complete details on the pros and cons of each. Also, within spray tanning there are different kinds of equipment, solutions, and technicians that can affect the quality of the tan. See “Anatomy Of A Great Spray Tan” for more information.
Q: What Is DHA? Is It Safe?
A: DHA is the main ingredient in our sunless tanning products. It is a simple, non-toxic sugar that is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane. When applied to the body, DHA will respond to the amino acids on the outermost layer of the skin, changing its color to a tan tone that looks beautiful. It is completely safe. We also offer nasal filters for people to feel more comfortable.
Q: So Is “The More DHA, The Better” A True Statement?
A: No! You don’t want a glob of DHA on you any more than you’d want to use an entire bottle of shampoo to wash your hair. All the extra shampoo doesn’t make your hair any cleaner, it just creates a huge mess and wastes your money. Similarly, companies that make concentrations of 10, 15 and even 20% DHA are just setting their customers up for a tan that looks horrible, dries out their skin, and feels tacky to the touch. What you should look for is a custom-blended formula that matches your skin tone to achieve the most realistic color.
Q: How Is A Tan From DHA Different From The One I Get From Tanning Booths or The Sun?
A: DHA reacts with the amino acids in your skin to change the color temporarily and naturally (generally lasts about 7 to 10 days). The effect is completely safe and is temporary because the outer layer of your skin is continually replacing old cells with new ones. Both the sun and tanning booths darken the skin by exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV); when exposed, cells known as melanocytes produce brown pigment called melanin, which darkens the skin as a natural defense against the UV radiation. Read more about the risks associated with UV tanning by clicking here.
Q: Why Do Some Tans Make People Look Like They Rolled In Orange Doritos?
A: Unnatural orange tones are usually the result of either too high of a concentration of DHA in the tanning formula, or over-application of a concentrated formula. Other companies generally only offer one color, and their formulas often contain DHA levels that are too high to deliver a natural looking tan. You can also end up looking orange by using automated booths and at-home tanning lotions if you’re not careful.
Q: Are There Any Cosmetics Or Colorants In Fantasy Tan’s Solutions?
A: Yes. DHA takes 8 to 12 hours to realize its full color potential. Five of our solutions are mixed with cosmetic bronzers to give your skin a beautiful cosmetic tan while the DHA is activating. Two of our solutions are clear and therefore do not contain any cosmetic bronzer. Your skin will gradually darken over the first 8-12 hours until it reaches its full color potential.
Q: Why Does Fantasy Tan Have 5 Different Tanning Solution Colors?
A: To make sure that your technicians can always deliver the precise color that you want. Most other companies only offer one or (maybe) two colors, so they are forced to attempt to adjust the color by applying more or less solution. This “trial and error” process often results in error (orange and/or dried out skin) more often than not.
Q: How Long Will A Fantasy Tan Last?
A: The average result is 7 to 10 days of color. Factors such as skin type, activities, and maintenance may cause results to vary.
Q: How Long Does It Take To Apply?
A: A full body session takes about 10 minutes depending on equipment settings and the technician’s technique. Your first visit may take longer as many salons offer a first time client consultation to discuss your skin type and desired expectations.
Q: Can I Use Fantasy Tan If I’m Pregnant?
A: There are no known side effects from the application of Fantasy Tan. As a precaution, if you are pregnant, you should always consult with your physician or other qualified health care provider before receiving a spray tan or any beauty or skin care application.
Q: Are There Age Restrictions On Fantasy Tan?
A: Salon policies and city/state regulations may vary upon location. Please check with your local salon when making your appointment to find out which restrictions may apply.
Q: I Read Something About Your Equipment Makes A Difference. What Does That Mean?
A: Fantasy Tan is unique because it has a mini spray gun for tanning the bulk of the body and an artistic airbrush for fine detail work. Detailing is important when applying solution to troublesome areas like the face, hands, and feet, etc. Other companies use a single vacuum cleaner powered spray gun that can only spray in wide patterns. These larger guns lack fine detail capability because they were originally designed for painting wooden fences, siding, and furniture – not people. Instead of an artistic tanning experience, they leave you feeling like you were hosed down, with a wet and sticky “I can’t wait to shower” feel.
Q: Can I Buy Fantasy Tan Equipment And Do It Myself At Home?
A: No. Fantasy Tan only sells its equipment and solution to qualified salons, mobile business, and other professional service providers.
