Accidents Will Happen

In the 1920's, German scientists used DHA in the X-Ray process. It was documented that DHA had skin-coloring effects when accidental spilling on the skin occurred. Because of World War II, further investigation into this browning effect ended abruptly. Scientists were now more focused on their contributions to the countries war efforts. It wasn't until the 1950's , when a researcher by the name of Eva Wittgenstein at a children's hospital at the University of Cincinnati , conducted experiments with DHA. Her studies included assisting children with glycogen storage disease. The children where administered large dosages (up to 1 gram per kilogram of child's body weight) of dihydroxyacetone orally. When the DHA made contact with a child's skin near the mouth from saliva or when accidentally spilled on the skin directly, a browning effect on the exposed areas often occurred later in the day.
