Health care workers reported these findings and Eva
Wittgenstein began experimenting with liquid DHA substances on her own
skin. Her studies indicated that the pigment change in the skin could be consistently reproduced. Further research revealed that that DHA did not penetrate beyond the stratum corneum (dead cells or surface layer of skin). Wittgenstein proved this with " tape stripping." After the skin was treated with DHA and before the pigmentation had developed, she had put some tape on the skin and pulled it off. No color had formed in the peeled areas. Later in the 1970's, DHA would be permanently added to the FDA's list of approved cosmetic ingredients. (Food and Drug Admin istration)
