Simply stated, Dihydroxyacetone is a simple non-toxic sugar. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane. (The kind used in sunless tanners is usually prepared by the fermentation of glycerin by Acetobacter suboxydans.) It is a white crystalline powder, which is water-soluble. Dihydroxyacetone is used in the cosmetics industry and usually is the main ingredient in most sunless tanning products.
