Like many revolutionary products, the concept of airbrush tanning
evolved through a combination of market feedback and savvy business
foresight. Unlike
most ideas, however, this alternate approach to the conventional "fake
bake" gained its true momentum for reasons beyond profitability. In
fact, airbrush tanning might not have evolved for years, were it not
for
the altruistic concern of one friend for another.
Since 1992, when Fantasy Faces first opened its doors, creator Starr
Hamson quickly realized that her product could extend to a market
outside of her immediate clientele. For years, she had joked that her dramatic airbrush creation (a contract with the band 'KISS', to give
you
an idea) could be used in more conventional approaches. Sometimes this
involved spray on tattoos, bug repellent, etc. But the most popular
'what if' involved the literal painting of one's body - that is, the
perfectly painted tan.
