If you’re spray tanning for the first time or going to a new salon, it’s important to be aware of the quality and type of session you’re getting. Pay attention to the technician and the steps he or she takes to give you a great spray tan!
Know the condition of your skin
Skin that is extra dry or oily affects the way a spray tan develops and the end result. Communicating your problem areas to your spray tan technician will allow them to work around the issues and use products that will aid in keeping your spray tan looking beautiful.
Ask for a consultation
If the salon doesn’t automatically ask for a consultation on your first spray tanning session, request one. The technician should be willing to take the time to understand your needs and why you’re getting a spray tan. You will also be able to point out the problem areas on your skin in a way that will help the technician properly prepare.
Be aware of the equipment
As the technician begins the session, ask about the equipment he or she is using. How familiar are they with it? Ask how they learned to spray tan using this equipment; did they watch a DVD or did they learn hands-on with a certified spray tan trainer? Is the equipment clean? Dirty equipment is an easy sign of inferior equipment, and/or neglectful technicians.
Be aware of the length of session
The length of your spray tan can be indicative of the quality of the equipment and the experience of the technician. Ask how long sessions usually take and what to expect from different technicians within the salon. Longer sessions (15-20 minutes) are a sign the technician will be more thorough. Sessions shorter than 10 minutes could indicate a technician not paying attention to detail, or that they are using equipment designed to paint large areas at once such as fences and houses instead of human bodies. Sessions longer than 20 minutes could indicate an inexperienced technician or could mean they are using outdated equipment designed for small detail work such as face painting or a makeup application.
Always ask questions!
Don’t be afraid to keep an open dialogue with your technician. You are paying for a service and a spray tan will be something that can affect your outward appearance for the next week-and-a-half! If you’re not happy with something, voice your opinion and be honest. A high-quality technician will be happy to make corrections to the spray tan or provide comfort by providing knowledgeable information to you.
By following these tips, you can be sure you receive the best spray tan possible while feeling completely comfortable during your session. Who knew it would be so easy to look bronzed and beautiful!
